Position Summary
The Phlebotomist / Infection Prevention Technician supports medically fragile pediatric residents through safe and professional specimen collection, infection prevention support activities, clinical assistance, and regulatory compliance functions. This position assists the facility’s Infection Prevention and Control Program while providing compassionate, resident-centered care in a pediatric skilled nursing environment.

Essential Functions
Phlebotomy & Clinical Support
- Perform pediatric venipuncture, capillary draws, and specimen collection procedures safely and professionally;
- Properly label, process, handle, store, and transport laboratory specimens according to facility protocol;
- Utilize age-appropriate techniques to minimize resident discomfort and anxiety during specimen collection;
- Monitor residents during and after specimen collection procedures and report concerns promptly;
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation related to specimen collection and laboratory activities;
- Maintain cleanliness, organization, and readiness of phlebotomy equipment and supplies;
- Assist with obtaining vital signs and other basic clinical support duties as assigned.
Infection Prevention & Control Support
- Assist with implementation and monitoring of the facility Infection Prevention and Control Program;
- Support infection surveillance activities, tracking, documentation, and reporting;
- Conduct observational rounds and audits related to: Hand hygiene compliance, PPE usage, isolation precautions, cleaning and sanitation practices, and infection prevention compliance throughout the facility;
- Monitor and report infection control concerns, trends, or breaches to nursing leadership and/or the Infection Preventionist;
- Assist with maintaining infection prevention logs, records, and audit tools;
- Support outbreak response procedures and infection prevention initiatives as directed;
- Help maintain appropriate inventory levels of PPE and infection prevention supplies;
- Reinforce infection prevention practices with staff in accordance with facility policies and procedures.
Resident & Family Interaction
- Provide compassionate, professional, and respectful interactions with residents, families, visitors, and staff;
- Support a pediatric-focused and family-centered care environment;
- Maintain resident dignity, confidentiality, and privacy at all times.
Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation in accordance with facility standards;
- Follow all HIPAA, OSHA, CDC, CMS, state, and facility regulations and guidelines;
- Participate in mandatory in-service education, infection prevention training, and staff meetings;
- Assist with survey readiness and regulatory compliance activities as assigned.
Professional Conduct and Compliance
- Maintains professional conduct and ensures resident safety, dignity, and respect at all times;
- Reports suspected abuse, neglect, or exploitation of residents in accordance with facility policy and applicable law;
- Performs duties in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations governing healthcare facilities, as well as facility policies, procedures, and clinical operations manuals;
- Works collaboratively with nurses, therapists, educators, and other interdisciplinary team members to support resident care plans;
- Provides family education and discharge training;
- Performs other related duties as assigned consistent with training, certification, and scope of practice.
Qualifications
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent required;
Certification / Licensure
- Active Nevada phlebotomy certification;
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification including infant, child, and adult CPR, AED use, and choking rescue.
Experience
- Experience in infection prevention, healthcare epidemiology, skilled nursing, long-term care, or healthcare support preferred;
- Knowledge of basic infection prevention principles and standard precautions.

Technical Skills
- Basic computer and mobile device skills sufficient to use electronic medical records (EMR), scheduling systems, and other facility software applications.
Physical Requirements
The physical demands described here are representative of those required to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.
- Frequent standing and walking throughout the shift (up to 12 hours);
- Frequent bending, kneeling, stooping, and reaching;
- Lift up to 50 pounds independently;
- Lift or move more than 100 pounds with assistance or mechanical equipment;
- Ability to assist with transferring or repositioning residents;
- Ability to respond quickly to resident needs or emergencies;
- Frequent repetitive motions;
- Ability to safely lift and transfer pediatric residents; stand and walk for extended periods; bend, kneel, squat, and reach frequently; respond quickly to emergencies; perform extended grooming tasks; perform laundry handling, stocking supplies, and cleaning equipment.
